31 Things To-Do 2019

Why not start the year with some fun goals to help keep you motivated and so you achieve more in 2019, while being supportive and social with your club?


  1. Do a triathlon;
  2. Complete 5 km in one of the triathlon disciplines;

Official Backed Event of 2018 is SILVER!

A highlight for the club this year was the club backed event – Weymouth Ironman where 32 of the club’s athletes attacked the race with tremendous cheering from the Tribe.

The day was made even more special as the club placed second on the TriClub Podium for the event just behind the hosts!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
You must bring your ticket to gain entry and the minimum age is 18 yrs. Security staff are provided by the venue for the safety and security of all party guests.

What can I bring into the event?
No food or alcohol is permitted to be brought on to the premises by any guests.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Parking is available at Pyramids and entrance to the event is to be gained by the rear entrance to the Glass House.

Portsmouth Triathlon 2017


Welcome to the 2017 Portsmouth Triathlon, organised by Portsmouth Triathletes.

Use M275 and A2030 to follow seafront signs. PO5 3PA for sat nav. Event based on Castle Field between
the D-Day Museum and the Pyramids. If you live locally, please come by bike or walk.

Road Closures:
06:00 – 11:30: Clarence Esplanade
07:30 – 11:00: South Parade (east) St Helens and Eastern Parade, Part of St Georges Rd,
Southsea Esplanade

Free car parking: St Helens Parade, EasternParade – but cars must be in by 07:30 and not moved
until after 11:00.

D-Day museum (WC here) – Free scratch card (show race number) access before 06:00 and no leaving until 11:30 (access until 07:00 via security at junction Avenue de Caen/Clarence Esplanade

Opens 06:15 – Closes 08:15 In tent on Castle Field, will be signposted and very close to Transition.

You must bring your British Triathlon membership card or you will be charged for the day rate insurance.

Numbers will be sent by e-mail 2 days before and race entries will be listed and posted at Registration. Find your number. Register your attendance, pick up your race pack and T-shirt, get body marked.

Race Pack contains: Chip timing strap (to be worn on left ankle), Bib number, Helmet sticker, Bike number, cable ties, swim wrist band, swim hat, goody bag, plus some fliers with special offers.
(note: £50 charges applies for lost or missing chip timing)

Opens from 06:15 – 12:30: entry and exit only with Bib number and must match your Bike number. Only competitors and marshals in transition please. Be prepared for Bikes and Helmet check. Remember bar ends plugs! Bike racking on the day, no big boxes please, rack by seat post, alternating both sides. A relay ‘Pen’ will be created for the Team relay to hand over their timing chip.

Closed Roads: Warning!

Although there is a prohibition of driving during the race there may be some individuals who feel they need to move a car before 1100/1130. Marshalls will try and prevent this happening but competitors are asked to be aware and expect anything, particulary when going ‘contra flow’. We will report errant drivers to the Police.

The race has a permit from British Triathlon. The swim is demanding, the bike course technical and non drafting, but the run is fun. Whilst we have St John Ambulance and Lifeguards to support us please do not take part if you are injured or ill on the day – you don’t want to get in the way of a real unplanned emergency.

You are strongly advised to wear a wet suit (safer, warmer and faster, so why wouldn’t you?). Timings above are approximate, swim starts will be confirmed with numbers a few days before. The swim is 3 to 4 mins walk from Transition. You will need to be on the Promenade 5 minutes before your swim time for a briefing and a role call, then a walk to the waters edge for a head count before your start. If there are problems with the wave before, the start may be delayed, so be prepared. The walk to the start is grass and tarmac, the beach will have a tarpaulin over the stones. You may wear old flip flops or trainers to the start, these will be collected and returned to transition and laid out in wave order. Due to the number of triathletes leaving the water we cannot provide a place for shoes  at the swim exit. If you have a medical need for shoes at swim exit then bring a second pair and speak to the Swim exit marshal about where to leave them. If you have a medical need to wear swim booties this should be made known to the organisers before the day.

The swim: a rectangular course taken clockwise (Olympic one full lap and then exit short of the second – left turn between 2 bouys and 2 finish flags on the beach. Sprint – round the 4 bouys finish as Olympic – left turn between 2 bouys set close together).
Swim waves will have different coloured swim hats – see above.  

Swim start will be at the waters edge. Shallow water for 50m. The Spring tide will be moving eastwards and like the weather can only be predicted. The 250m into the tide will be testing. Best advice: don’t stop, keep sighting.
If you make no headway into the tide the Lifeguards may ask you to retire (if so, you can come ashore and continue with Bike/Run but you will be a DNF). If you wish to retire during the swim you can make your own way to the beach taking care not to impede other swimmers. Make sure your retirement is noted and wrist band returned.

If you are having difficulty swimming due to illness or injury turn on your back, raise one arm and/or shout to the support crew. They may have to prioritise medical issues, so if you choose to retire don’t expect the Lifeguards to be a water taxi!

Swimmers will be given a wrist band (same number) in the race pack. At the swim exit, give this to the Marshall. If you have to retire make sure the band goes to the swim finish line.

BTA rules, bike roadworthy, helmet at all times, no drafting, be mindful of other competitors
and – expect the unexpected.

Roads will be closed but some cars will be parked on route. It will be an offence to drive them during race hours. Some motorists however, have ignored the Road Closures in the past and many pedestrians still believe we should give way on Pedestrian crossings. Please avoid them! All roads junctions and marked crossings will be Marshalled but still take care.

There are 4 areas where racing will be neutralised – NO OVERTAKING – and care to other competitors. 
First – Clarence Esplanade West – a U turn near Mozzarella Joe’s – 25m before, slow right down, be aware bikes pull to the left before taking the U turn to the right and avoid others when pulling away.
Secondly – The Dell, travelling east past the Pyramids you take a very tight left and an immediate right onto South Parade. NO OVERTAKING. Slow and brake before the first corner, if you take it too fast you will run out of road for the second. Again watch out for others.
Thirdly – the long bend around the golf course to get you onto Southsea esplanade – St Georges Rd – you will be on the ‘wrong’ side of the road, a tight right hander. Traffic will be using the other lane (other side of crash barriers/kerb stones). Great care please and mindful of others.
Lastly – when you pass South Parade Pier and re-enter Clarence Esplanade, you will be going the wrong way up a single lane exit and so your racing line will take you close to raised kerbs and lamp posts.  

Be aware that the Run section includes the 2m parking bay area on left of road on the way down to Mozzarella Joe’s – cyclists should keep away from runners.

Be aware also – If its windy your speed with the wind will be greater than normal so your breaking distance and reactions need to be greater too. If its wet – and there is a lot of paint and drain covers en route – you will need to take even greater care on the Bike.

Bike mount line will be marked close to the drop kerb at the yellow gate and then: 7 laps Olympic, 4 laps Sprint – you must count your own laps! Bike dismount will be by Dirt2Road. At 11:10 the west bound lane by Bike dismount will be closed – any bikes approaching after this time will be directed into transition.

Bike Mechanic: Bike Fixers will be around for last minute fine tuning (but not major repairs!).

The 2.5K run loop is taken 4 times by Olympic and twice by Sprint. The first 1K is on the road way (kerb to 2m is for runners) down to Mozzarella Joe’s where a number count is taken, left turn onto pavement, at the Blue Reef cafe take the right fork and keep to the right (next to the sea) continue past Southsea Castle dropping down to meet up with the swim exit , turn left and proceed to transition (passing along the west side). Everyone gets a PINK WRIST BAND.
Olympic runners have to collect 2 more
PINK WRIST BANDS on the final lap as you come back to the Pyramids you take a tight left turn, go up an incline to the Ramparts, 100m and descend sharply on to the Castle Field where finish is 100m away towards transition.

Team Relay Competitors:
You will need to hand over your Timing Chip in the relay ‘Pen’ in transition.

Finish Line:
Make sure we can see your number! Enjoy the moment and smile for the supporters and cameras. Collect your medal, return chip timing and get refreshment!

DB Max Multi Sports and Precision Timing will again be recording split times, and individual times will be available from the Registration tent after you finish. Their web site will carry full details a certificate to down load and a finish line video.

All competitors will get free photographs to download.

We have some very generous prizes from sponsors (overall 1,2,3 ) plus a range of Age Group winners trophies from Portsmouth Triathletes (10 year age groups for trophies, 20’s, 30’s etc.)   

Results will be available from the DBMax website soon after the finish. Results will show overall winners plus the normal 5 year age group placings.

BTF rules:
Racing Conduct: treat competitors, officials, volunteers, spectators, residents with courtesy. Drafting: mind the gap – front wheel to front wheel is 10m and you have 20 seconds to pass. Illegal equipment: MP3 players, mobile phones, personal video recorders – not to be used! Helmets: chinstrap not loose, buckle before touching bike. Litter: Please use dustbins provided – especially those sticky gel wrappers. Volunteers hate them!

Available at the Pyramids. A fee may be payable.
Hot drinks, food will be available on the Castle Field and on the seafront.

Plan B:
In the event of bad weather we will revert to a Duathlon, the swim being replaced by a 5K run to Eastney and back (wave start order at 10 min intervals from the Lifeguard Hut).

Portsmouth Triathlon 10th September 2017


Time is running out for Entries to the Portsmouth Triathlon 2017.

This popular Triathlon takes place on 10th September and entries will close one week before.

Castle Field, Southsea will again be the centre of top class Triathlon action with a field of over 250 expected to take part.
There will be 2 distances, Olympic (1500m open water swim, 42K bike, 10K run) and Sprint (750m open water swim, 24K bike, 5K run). New for 2017 will be a Team event, Sprint distance (teams of 3, with one person per discipline) for people who want to sample the Triathlon atmosphere but don’t want to tackle the full event (yet!).

There will also be a corporate challenge Cup for the business that puts in the fastest Team.

Portsmouth Triathletes Race Director Nigel Selley would like to thank Club members, local businesses, the City Council, Portsmouth University, Portsmouth Lifeguards for their support and help in promoting this event again this year and plans to make the event a day to remember.

How does it work?

·         17 European Qualification Races are leading up to 1 regional final

·         The EMEA IRONMAN TriClub Championship Final is held in May 2018 at the IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona

·         All clubs who win the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in their division at one of the qualifying races are eligible to take part in the final.

·         Your club has qualified and is now eligible to compete in the final in May 2018


What to do?

·         Your team members need to register for the final: We will let you know as soon as registration for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona will open.

·         You can race with as many club members as you like

·         The best 5 Athletes will count to the club ranking

·         The club with the highest amount of accumulated points will be crowned EMEA IRONMAN TRICLUB CHAMPION in Calella, Barcelona.

Those wishing to join us for an early morning training session but are not sure, Alex Campbell is going to run taster sessions on the first Monday of the month starting Monday June 5th. These are great sessions for improving your fitness & technique, when Ironman training get your swimming done early leaving plenty of time for your other disciplines. If you want to come along please let us know using the email for information, numbers will be limited to 6/7 at a time so get in early and secure your place.
