Sat 9:00 am; Tues 6:00pm (Spring and Summer season only)
We swim together as a group for safety, at Eastney beach, within the yellow buoys which mark the swimmng area opposite St Georges Rd, near the pitch and putt golf course.
Our sessions are for club members and are not coached therefore anyone participating does so entirely at their own risk. You must always undertake your own assessment of the conditions before entering the water. The Portsmouth Triathletes club take no responsibility for the safety or belongings of any person participating in our sea swimming sessions. The club does not provide a rescue service during the hosted sea swim sessions.
All swimmers are advised for their safety to remain within the boundary of the designated swim zone area which is marked by yellow bouys. The club kayak and beach patrol will only operate as far as the submarine blocks.
Family members aged under 16 may participate at the discretion of the Lead Officer but must be supervised at all times by a parent/responsible adult.
The first sea swim of 2017 will be held at 4:00pm on May 1st Bank Holiday Monday. After then, regular swims will follow every Saturday from 6th May, to be in the water by 9:00am at the latest, in order to avoid the Park Runners, throughout May until the end of October. We also swim Tuesdays, meet 6:00pm to get in the water by 6:15pm, first session on 9th May.
Before participating in a club sea swim session you must have completed an In Case of Emergency (ICE) form and read the accompanying advice notes issued by the club. You must also sign the attendance register at every session before entering the sea and sign out immediately on leaving the water.
The club will provide a volunteer Beach Watch Officer who will administer the attendance register at the water edge, please volunteer on the rota for this position. We may also provide a kayak patrol at the discretion of the Lead Officer, this is not a rescue service, but provides a barrier between the swimmers and any passing craft. Please also volunteer for this role if you have suitable sea kayak experience. We may also provide a Beach Patrol on busy sessions which is also on the rota.
Please attend and listen to the safety briefing which will be given 5-minutes before each session. All participants are strongly encouraged to wear a yellow club swim hat (£3) so you can be identified in the water. Spare hats are available upon request.
Our sea swims are not coached, but they do give us a chance to practice open water swimming in a much safer environment. These sessions are not suitable for non swimmers wishing to learn to swim.
Be safe! We don’t recommend open water swimming far offshore alone!.
We also have the use of a beach hut, convenient for securing your bags and for tea and cake after! Many also/instead have a run along the prom after.
Meet at beach hut number 14, opposite the beachside “Coffee Cup” café, it’s just on the east side of where St Georges Road meets the esplanade.
